Whereas the Anglo-American management tradition tends to emphasize that especially the interests of the shareholders are taken into consideration, the European continental tradition typically takes a broader perspective and also takes into account the interests and possible contribution of other powerful groups or institutions.
Maintaining a constructive dialogue with local authorities and other governmental institution is an obvious example of a vital requirement to protect and develop the opportunities of the firm. Intensive involvement in research and education in (local) universities and other schools is another which recently became more recognized as a possible explanation for difference in innovation performance. This theme studies these and other elements of stakeholder management and tries to find general principles and define best practices in this respect.
