PhD Project:
The project focuses on leadership in and through (top) management teams. More specifically, I am interested in how the boundary spanning experiece of managers materializes into actual behavior of management team members. Management team fulfill an important coordination function in which divergent interests and goals of interdependent organizational departments have to be integrated to improve the performance of organization. In practice this involves that every member of a management team needs to consider the interests of the organization as a whole in addition to the interests of the separate organizational unit the manager represents. Still little is understood about how the balancing act of interests influences the interaction behavior of management team members and management team functioning, respectively. This project aims to increase our knowledge on these interaction processes by going beyond the conventional survey research methods. By means of video observation and action research of actual management team meetings, we wish to gain further insights into what is going on inside the boardroom.
