Since September 2007, Annemarie Nelen is a PhD student at the Research Centre of Education and the Labour Market (ROA). Before that, she studied Social Economics at Maastricht University and studied one semester at the Humboldt Universität in Berlin. Annemarie’s PhD research focuses on the relationship between part-time employment and human capital development. Even though much research has been done on part-time labour demand and supply and the part-time pay penalty, there is still not much literature on the relationship between part-time employment and workers’ human capital development. Related to this, not much research has been conducted on the consequences of part-time work (other than wages and occupational downgrading). Annemarie will contribute to existing literature by analyzing the relationship between part-time employment and human capital development and the related consequences. Her research interests are human capital development, part-time employment, labour market mobility, and age-earnings profiles.
Short Description of PhD Project Annemarie Nelen
Annemarie’s PhD research focuses on the relationship between part-time employment and human capital development. Even though much research has been done on part-time labour demand and supply and the part-time pay penalty, there is still not much literature on the relationship between part-time employment and workers’ human capital development. Related to this, not much research has been conducted on the consequences of part-time work (other than wages and occupational downgrading). Annemarie will contribute to existing literature by analyzing the relationship between part-time employment and human capital development and the related consequences. More precisely, the aim of her thesis is to investigate the effects of part-time employment on intra and inter generational human capital investments, and how this can explain differences in workers’ careers, firms’ productivity, andchildren’s human capital outcomes.
